JANUS
Quantum computing for ATM applications
Jumpstarting air navigation services with quantum solutions. Exploring opportunities and addressing challenges at the intersection of quantum computing and air traffic management.
The JANUS project
JANUS systematically investigates how quantum computing technologies can transform air traffic management systems. Through a structured methodology combining systematic literature review, community engagement, and hands-on experimentation, we identify high-impact applications, quantify potential benefits, and address emerging cybersecurity challenges.
Two faces, one project
Like our namesake — the Roman two-faced deity — we look in two directions simultaneously: toward the opportunities quantum computing offers for solving hard ATM problems, and toward the threats it poses to current cryptographic infrastructure. Both lines of research are pursued together, ensuring cybersecure solutions by design.
Quantum computing for ATM
From airspace sectorisation to traffic flow management, many of the hardest problems in ATM are combinatorial optimisation challenges that may benefit from quantum approaches. Our domain-reference library explains the foundational concepts.
Post-quantum security
Quantum computing threatens current public-key cryptography. Our parallel work stream develops a migration roadmap for ATM communications, aligned with NIST standards and European regulatory frameworks.
